Serendipity Shawl Crochet Pattern
Introducing the Serendipity Shawl. I designed this shawl pattern using such a beautiful special yarn that I received with a copy of Yarnologie. This yarn is beautifully hand dyed, such a pretty mix of purple, pink, and subtle yellows and orange patches throughout.
Just look at it! It’s so pretty! This single ply yarn needed a beautiful simple stitch pattern to let this yarn shine. Light weight yarns might seem intimidating to lot of people but I am not one of them. Yes they take longer to work up, but the drape… people, the drape on the resulting fabric is just dreamy. If you follow Toni from TL Yarn Crafts at all, you know she loves a good drape on a shawl, and I honestly think this pattern gives us another lovely drapey fabric!
The pattern is very beginner friendly, if you can do a double crochet, you can create this shawl. The trick with this pattern is that the stitches are worked in the spaces between stitches, rather than directly into the stitch below.

Materials
3.5mm Crochet Hook
Two 100gm skeins of single ply fingering weight yarn.
Yarn used was Blackwattle Yarn and Fibre, Sweet Pea 4-ply yarn - 60% Superwashed merino, 20% Alpaca, 20% silk. The colourway is Serendipity as a special edition for Yarnologie Magazine.
Stitches and abbreviations used (US terminology)
SK ST: Skip Stitch
SL ST: Slip stitch
CH: Chain
CH-SP: Chain Space
SC: Single crochet
DC: Double Crochet
Pattern Notes
Pattern repeats for each round are marked with * and italics.
Wet blocking is a must for this pattern to ensure you get the delicious drape and let your stitches really set into place.
Gauge: 4 inches = 23 stitches and 19 rows - check your gauge with a blocked swatch to ensure you have the right drape.
All stitches in this shawl pattern are worked in between stitches rather than into the stitch.
Serendipity Shawl Pattern
Row 1: CH 12
Row 2: SK 2 CH, DC in 3rd CH, DC in each CH to end. (10 DC)
Row 3: CH 2, turn, DC in between each stitch across row, at the last two stitches, make 2 DC in each of the last 2 spaces.
Row 4: CH 2, turn, DC in between each stitch across row. At the last three stitches, make a DC2TOG in the last two spaces between these stitches.
Row 5: repeat row 3.
Row 6: repeat row 4.
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have 20 rows.
Row 21: CH 2, turn, DC in between each stitch across the row, at the last two stitches, make 2 DC in each of the last two spaces.
Row 22: CH 2, turn, 2 DC in first two spaces, DC in between each stitch across to the last three stitches. Make a DC2TOG in the last two spaces between these stitches.
Repeat rows 21 and 22 until you have 15 grams of yarn left.
For the final row, SC, CH 3 in each space between stitches across.
Fasten yarn and sew in ends.
Wet block and pin out shawl to set stitches and give your shawl a beautiful drape.
