Gidget Mandala Crochet Pattern

The Gidget Mandala Crochet Pattern was a true labour of love. No really. I laboured over this pattern and I just couldn’t get it right!

I had to put it in the naughty corner for a couple of months before I could bring it out again and try and finish it off. Then suddenly, it was perfect!

This pattern began with some inspiration from a wonderful company I was working with in 2022, The Gidget Foundation. The Gidget Foundation is an incredible not-for-profit organisation that provides programs to support the emotional well-being of expectant and new parents. If you are a new or expectant parent who would use some support, please check out their website here and their facebook groups, they are a wonderful source of community for parents.

A colourful crochet mandala using a graduating colour yarn

Initially I had a vision of this mandala being crocheted onto a hoop and having more of the pattern extend past the hoop, but it felt a little too close to the Connies Ray of Hope Mandala by Emily of The Loopy Stitch. So that’s when she had to sit in the naughty corner and wait for the right pattern to come to me. Once I’d been able to get some space from it, I was able to re-imagine the last section of the pattern.

So now that this mandala has been released into the world, you can get your hands on it! It is available as a downloadable PDF over in my shop, or on Etsy or Ravelry. So you can shop where you prefer!

I created three different sizes of the Gidget Mandala using three different weighted yarns. First there is this beautiful smaller mandala made using a Scheepjes Whirl (I used only around 35gms of the whirl and I cut the yarn to make the colour changes happened where I wanted them to!) I used a 3.5mm hook for this one and it came out to 30cm tip to tip.

The beige mandala is made using Bendigo Woollen Mills Cotton 10 ply in the Parchment colourway. I used a 4.5mm hook for this one and it came out at 45cm tip to tip.

And finally, the largest of the mandalas is the grey one and it came out at 50cm tip to tip. I made this one with Lion Brand Heartland Yarn in Mount Rainier colourway and used a 6mm hook.

I wanted to show that your yarn and hook choice will greatly impact the finished mandala and its size.

My wonderful tester Crystalynn created this amazing version.
