Free dish scrubby crochet pattern
Have you ever been proven wrong about something? Dish scrubbys and washcloths proved me wrong. I never wanted to make them and actively avoided them when people suggested I give them a try! It wasn’t until I was asked to make a washcloth as a custom order that I dove into the rabbit hole of practical crochet projects and I am so glad I finally did!
I now use handmade wash cloths and dish scrubbies most days. Only when they are getting a refresh in the washing machine do I reach for anything different!
When I began making them I did a little trial and error with the different types of scrubby yarn and the one I prefer is the Red Heart Scrubby yarn. I tried some cotton-based scrubby yarns and I found when trying to frog them back that the yarn just broke apart. I figured that if it will break apart that easily when trying to frog the work back, how long would it realistically hold together through hard scrubbing. So for that reason, I chose to use the Polyester based Red Heart Scrubby yarn.
Below are a couple of videos I took one night when I had to use these scrubbys to clean our BBQ plates. I can’t remember what we cooked that night, but BBQs aren’t always the easiest things to clean and these scrubbys made it shine again!
Dish Scrubby Crochet Pattern
Materials needed:
To make your own dish scrubby, you will need:
One ball of Red Heart Scrubby yarn in your chosen colour.
OR
Other brand scrubby yarn such as Lily sugar n cream.
5mm Crochet hook
Gauge:
10cm = 14 stitches x 18 rows
Stitches and abbreviations used (US terminology):
CH: Chain
SL ST: Slip stitch
SC: Single crochet
Given the profile of this yarn is so fuzzy, it can be difficult to see your stitches. That’s why these patterns need to be simple. You know you need to have 14 stitches at the end of each row, it isn’t going to matter if the stitches end up a little wonky, as long as there are 14 of them. These patterns are very forgiving, however can be difficult for the beginner crocheter who isn’t familiar with the anatomy of a stitch.
Dish scrubby pattern
Chain 15
Row 1: Starting in the second chain from the hook, SC in each chain across. Turn work. (14 stitches)
Row 2 - 24: CH 1, (Doesn’t count as a stitch) SC in each stitch across. Turn work. (14 stitches)
When you have made 24 rows, or your piece measures 15cm high, fold the piece in half like in the photo below. You will now be working SC into both sides of your piece to close it up. You will work 2 SC in the corners and one SC in each stitch and row end around the whole piece until you reach the start. Fasten off and tie a few extra knots. Your scrubby will take some serious bashing around, so make sure you secure those ends well. I like to sew them through the stitches, and then in and out of the middle of the scrubby a few times.
